The diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy is a truly interdisciplinary specialty. Columbia University Medical Center is proud to have one of the leading centers in the world devoted exclusively to the medical and surgical management of complex epileptic disorders. The Columbia Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (CCEC) is led by Dr. Frank Gilliam, who directs a team of 13 Epilepsy Neurologists solely dedicated to the comprehensive care of epilepsy patients. The CCEC is made up of various specialists in the fields of Epilepsy Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurophysiology, Neuropsychology, and Neuroradiology. Epilepsy surgeons Dr. Robert R. Goodman and Dr. Guy McKhann (Adult and Pediatric Epilepsy), and Pediatric Surgeons Dr. Saadi Ghatan and Dr. Neil Feldstein (Pediatric Epilepsy) combine to give the CCEC one most experienced and skilled epilepsy surgery teams in the world. The CCEC is equipped with state of the art Adult and Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Units located in the Milstein Hospital and the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, respectively.
For many forms of epilepsy that cannot be adequately controlled with antiseizure medications, epilepsy surgery is the best and often the only chance of seizure control or cure. The goal of resective epilepsy surgery is to safely remove the area(s) of the brain from which seizures emanate. A variety of highly specialized techniques are applied to maximize the efficacy and safety of epilepsy surgical procedures.
Columbia is a leading site in all of the major clinical epilepsy surgical therapies currently under trial as part of multi-institutional NIH or industry sponsored studies. Led by Drs. Goodman and McKhann, together with neurologists from the Columbia Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, these include:
1) Responsive brain stimulation (RNS).
2) Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for various forms of focal epilepsy.
3) Gamma knife radiosurgery for the treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy.
4) Investigation of a multichannel microelectrode for microseizure detection.
